Fado, as some of you may know, is Portugal’s national song. It has recently been added to UNESCO’s list of World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. Amália Rodrigues is the most well-known fado singer, having taken this genre of music all over the world in her days.
There are many successful new singers, like Mariza, Ana Moura, Camané, and Cristina Branco.
Recently, a new name had been added to this list: Gisela João. Gisela was born in the north of Portugal, and started singing early on. She moved to Lisbon, started performing in fado houses, and has been more and more successful. Her first album came out a few weeks ago (buy on iTunes), and is exceptional. She has a powerful voice (see video below), and the choice of repertoire is flawless, in my opinion.
I had the privilege of photographing her last year. She was fantastic and always in a good mood. We played her music and she sang along. Sometimes it was hard not to stop photographing and just listen to her voice.
I am very happy with the success she’s having. It’s well deserved.
