Landscape photography is, without a doubt, one of the favorite categories of this art form. Capturing nature’s beauty has fascinated photographers, amateur and professional alike. Most of us aren’t indifferent to a beautiful sunrise, the waves crashing on a beach, or an imponent mountain covered in snow.
Let me tell you about DPS’s most recent book, “Living Landscapes – A Guide to Stunning Landscape Photography“. I’ve read it in a couple of days, and must say I was very impressed. It covers all the basic knowledge you should have to add this kind of photography to your bag of tricks.
The authors, Todd and Susan Sisson, start by giving us an overview of what landscape photography is.
They then approach the tools of the trade, such as camera, lenses, tripod, and filters. Tripods are essential, since a great part of the images are made at a low shutter speed. Filters greatly enhance the final result. The book goes into detail by explaining each part of the gear you’ll need.
The second part of the book tells us about the craft of this kind of photography. It is fundamental that you know and control the technical side, so you can concentrate on the more artistic aspects of your vision. The different aspects of exposure are explained as well, all with visual examples.
Creativity is another section of “Living Landscapes”. Subject, light, and composition are covered, along with many images made by the authors.
Post-production is part of the creative process, so we are led through the process of working on several images to enhance them further. Lightroom is the tool of choice here, since it does most, if not all, that you’ll need to produce the final result. Photoshop is not covered.
The book ends with some very useful nature and landscape photography advice. There are several tips on photographing:
- Sunsets and sunrises
- Black and White
- Panoramic images
I believe this book is useful for all levels of expertise. Beginners will get a sound foundation on this kind of photography, and more advanced shooters will go away with more than a couple of useful tips. I acquired many good insights, and can’t wait to start applying them.
